Communications Associate

Position Title: Communications Associate

Reports To: Executive Director

Part-Time: 20 – 25 Hrs./Week

Compensation: $20-25/per hour, hourly (60% onsite/ 40% WFH if desired)

Position Summary

Ace Makerspace is seeking a reliable, proactive professional to implement its communications plan. The successful candidate will advance the organization’s reach, engage with internal and external constituents, and drive broad awareness of our mission.

The Communications Associate will work collaboratively with senior staff and program-level contributors to create and disseminate the organization’s overall message. Candidates will be self-motivated with experience and skills in collaboration, multiple writing styles, and project management. They will be able to work effectively within a context that requires flexibility, a sense of humor, and the ability to flourish in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. 

The Communications Associate will produce various communications including web content, newsletters, digital and print marketing material, recruiting correspondence, social media, and in-house Slack moderation. 

Primary Responsibilities

Communications

  • Write, curate, and edit content for external-facing newsletters and announcements.
  • Generate member-facing newsletters and e-blast communications in Mailchimp with design and text elements achieving both informational and engagement purposes.
  • Manage and create monthly posts for our various calendars 
  • Write event descriptions for classes and workshops for various platforms
  • Write and manage volunteer recruitment posts for Slack, external platforms, and social media 

Web & Social Media

  • Publish blogs, updates, and announcements and make edits to the  Ace Makerspace website as a tool for both promoting Ace programs externally, and providing information for current members. 
  • Manage our social media presence (Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram) by drafting and curating content, scheduling all posts, and engaging on social platforms through retweets, comments, messaging, and active monitoring
  • Create a healthy social presence through messaging on all social platforms that result in increased community engagement and outreach

Material Development

  • Update Ace’s existing collateral material by working with graphic design contributors
  • Organize marketing assets and use basic graphic design skills in add and images and photos in layouts and other materials
  • Write content for print media (flyers, brochures, etc.)

Collaboration with Leadership

  • Collaborates with leaders, volunteers, and members to identify content opportunities.
  • Provide editing and copywriting support for the Ace program teams, including program launch materials, and program impact stories.
  • Support Ace Leaders to amplify their voices and leverage and respond to communications and development opportunities.
  • Perform light moderation of the Member forums.

Other duties as needed and assigned.

Qualifications

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Please be prepared to provide samples of your work.

Minimum  Qualifications:

  • Minimum 2-5 years of professional communications experience.
  • Strong writing and editing skills, with portfolio samples.
  • Comfortable with collaboration and self-managing time.
  • Experience creating content for social media.
  • Strong interpersonal, listening, questioning & communications skills. 
  • Deep commitment to an “inclusion, equity, and diversity first” approach.
  • Experience with Mailchimp, Word, Google Docs, Slack. 
  • Embraces the “Maker” culture, has an understanding of the Ace Community including engaging in the practice of physical making of some form

Other Desirable  Qualifications:

  • Experience at a non-profit or foundation is preferred.
  • Relevant digital communications experience.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Basic Image editing and graphic design skills. Experience with Adobe Creative Suite or willingness to learn 
  • Proficient in Spanish with a willingness to translate written materials

Education:

  • Associate degree or at least two additional years of related experience.

IMMEDIATE JOB OPPORTUNIT

Help us wrangle the on-site logistics for a non-profit makerspace! Your core responsibility is giving tours to prospective members, assisting new members to find their way, and being a representative of Ace Makerspace. Daily work includes giving tours receiving packages, stocking supplies, and delicious snacks, and helping to manage correspondence. Our makerspace is a non-profit with 100+ creative makers, interesting tools, and shared workspaces.

Responsibilities

Guest and Member Services_

  • Give tours (COVID SAFE) to prospective new members
  • Help new members become oriented
  • Assist members with finding tools and engaging with space care

Operations

  • Communicate inventory needs to the officers and stewards
  • Straighten and clean use areas the end of the day; bending and reaching to pick up exhibit items; replace printer toner and/or drum; etc.)
  • Sort postal mail, including packages
  • Receive and process deliveries
  • Other duties as needed

Qualifications

  • Minimum 1-years of experience in membership or customer relations, preferably in a museum, retail or attractions environment
  • Ability to lift up to 50lbs and clearly navigate stairs and shops
  • Proficiency in MS Office, Google Docs
  • Knowledge of, or ability to learn, WordPress and other data entry systems
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Takes initiative, good judgment, and diplomatic problem-solving skills
  • Ability to evaluate and prioritize tasks assigned
  • Bilingual or Multilingual encouraged

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Part-time, non-exempt, 16 hours per week (though sometimes more hours are available). Wednesday 11 to 8pm shift non-negotiable. The other shift is flexible.
  • Compensation: $20/hr
  • Health insurance benefits not included at this time due to the small size of the organization
  • Perks include: Ace Makerspace membership
