Serger Basics

Level up your sewing skills by learning how to use a Serger (aka Overlock) Sewing Machine. Use this machine to finish garments and seams like a pro, sew stretch fabrics easily, or create fun decorative details. In this hands-on certification class we’ll cover basic threading, tensioning, operation, and troubleshooting. Masks are optional for this event.

Level: Beginner
Timing: 3 Hours
Location: Coworking/Textiles suite 206
Prerequisites: Sewing 101, or basic sewing machine experience
Certification: Certification on the Ace Juki MO-655N Sergers
Age: 18+


  • Overview of basic functions
  • Reading the manual
  • Hands on practice changing the needle, threading for 3-Thread Overlock, adjusting the tension for sewing a variety of fabric types
  • Overview of basic troubleshooting, working with a differential feed, and tensioning

What to Bring: A well charged phone or notebook for taking notes
What to wear: The glasses or contact lenses you use for reading (optional)

This class requires a minimum of 2 students per session. If the class is canceled, we can offer a refund but otherwise, do not.

Members may use the space quietly for coworking or light machine work as long as it does not interrupt the class.

Refund & Cancellation Policy

Refunds, Transfers, or Credits are only offered if the class is canceled. We do not offer credits, transfers, or refunds for student cancelations. You can offer your seat for sale to others (use the comments). You are solely responsible for those transactions & letting us know who is taking your spot.

Late Arrival Policy

Arriving on time to class is very important.

For certification classes we are unable to accommodate late arrivals. If you arrive more than 10 minutes past the start time you will be unable to attend that day and your class fee is forfeit. For non-certification classes, your ability to participate will be based on instructor discretion.
